Prosecutors to appeal text, email ruling in Gliniewicz case

WAUKEGAN, Ill. (AP) - Prosecutors in northern Illinois say they will appeal a judge's ruling regarding the upcoming trial of the wife of a former Fox Lake Police lieutenant who killed himself.

A Lake County judge on Monday morning upheld a previous ruling that prosecutors can't present as evidence text and emails between Charles Gliniewicz (GLIHN'-uh-wihts) and his widow, Melodie Gliniewicz. She was indicted after her husband committed suicide in September 2015. She has pleaded not guilty to charges including siphoning money from the village's youth policing program.

Authorities say Charles Gliniewicz staged his suicide because he feared discovery of his embezzlement from the youth program.

Judge James Booras said presenting the communications between the husband and wife violates state marital privilege laws.
