Winfield Road bridge repair planned

An $871,000 project to repair and resurface the bridge that carries Winfield Road over Springbrook Creek near Winfield is slated to begin in mid-July, DuPage County officials announced Friday.

The county's division of transportation is doing the project to extend the life of the four-lane bridge, which is south of the intersection of Winfield and Mack roads.

"We take it very seriously to continually update bridges so we can get 50, 60 really good years out of them," said Jim Healy, vice chairman of the DuPage County Board's transportation committee.

In addition to resurfacing the deck, crews will reconstruct the bridge approaches and complete other ancillary work.

"The bridge top needs to be replaced because of its age and the extent of its deterioration," Healy said.

During construction, Winfield Road will be reduced to a single lane in each direction just south of Mack so the bridge can be improved one half at a time, officials said.

Officials said left turns from Winfield onto Mack will be prohibited. Left turns from northbound Winfield to Purnell Road also will be prohibited.

Local detours will be posted to accommodate temporary left-turn restrictions.

Work is expected to be completed by the end of October.

The bridge project is part of the county's roughly $21.3 million highway and trail construction program for 2017. Information about the program is available at dupageco.org/dot/construction.
