Gary man accused of leaving baby in abandoned car surrenders

GARY, Ind. (AP) - A Gary man has surrendered to face charges alleging he took his 4-month-old daughter from her mother and left the child in the trunk of an abandoned car.

Gary Police Lt. Dawn Westerfield says 26-year-old Billie Roy White Jr. surrendered Friday morning at the Lake County Jail in Crown Point. He faces two counts of neglect of a dependent and domestic battery.

Westerfield says White beat the mother of his children and took the girl Saturday, then returned home without her and refused to say where she was. Officers with a police dog found her unharmed about two hours later.

Westerfield told WBBM that White was arrested later Saturday but released Monday when he couldn't be formally charged within 48 hours because the prosecutor's office wasn't open on Memorial Day.
