WNBA changes All-Star selection process, gives players vote

NEW YORK (AP) - The WNBA is changing its All-Star voting format and will allow players and media to join fans in the selection process for the starters.

The fan vote will count for 50 percent while current players and a media panel will account for 25 percent each. The change mirrors the NBA All-Star selection process that was put in place this past season.

"I'm curious to see how it's going to work out. It's exciting to give players a voice. We face that competition night in and night out," said Dallas guard Skylar Diggins-Smith. "You get to know your peers and see a different perspective. I think it should be interesting."

Diggins-Smith said she'll focus on other things besides just points scored.

"You understand that it's more than points. It's value to the team," she said. "When you do scouting reports, you understand what makes their teams go and the leaders of their team. You have to put up the numbers as well. There is so much talent in this league that it's going to be interesting to see how this plays out."

Starters for previous WNBA All-Star Games were selected by fan votes.

Like the fans, the players and media will vote for two backcourt players and three frontcourt players. Each player and media member can vote once. Players can vote for themselves and teammates.

"I think it's great that players will now have a say in All-Star voting. We recognize the successes of our opponents and teammates, and being able to vote is meaningful," said San Antonio's Monique Currie. "It probably means more to know your peers appreciate your hard work and growth and want to see you rewarded."

Voting begins on June 13 and ends on July 6. Starters will be revealed five days later. Coaches will still pick the reserves and they will be announced on July 18.

The All-Star game will take place on July 22 in Seattle.
