Heavy storms cause flash flooding in southern Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Heavy rain is causing flash flooding in southern Indiana, prompting Washington County authorities to declare a state of emergency.

Washington County emergency management coordinator Desi Alexander said Friday that many roads were under water in and around Salem, about 35 miles northwest of Louisville, Kentucky. Water has been reported in several buildings, with vehicles also taking on water.

The National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency for all or parts of Washington, Jefferson, Clark and Scott counties. It said local law enforcement agencies reported flash flooding and several water rescues in progress early Friday evening in Washington County.

Indiana State Police Sgt. Jerry Goodin said the city of Seymour north of Salem had downtown street flooding.

Severe thunderstorms passed through the region earlier Friday.
