2 probes of shooting of jail inmate during hospital standoff

GENEVA, Ill. (AP) - Authorities will conduct two investigations in the wake of a hostage situation at a suburban Chicago hospital that ended with an officer fatally shooting an armed jail inmate.

Kane County Sheriff's Office spokesman Patrick Gengler said Sunday the Illinois State Police will conduct a use-of-force investigation after the shooting of 21-year-old Tywon Salters. He says it's typical for an outside agency to investigate officer-involved shootings.

Gengler said the department itself will investigate how Salters was able to steal a gun on Saturday from a corrections' officer who was guarding him.

Saturday's incident began when Salters grabbed the officer's gun at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva and took two nurses as hostages. After negotiations broke down, a SWAT team moved in and the officer shot Salters at about 5 p.m.
