19-year-old man convicted of murder in 11-year-old's death

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. (AP) - Prosecutors say a southern Illinois judge has convicted a 19-year-old man of murder in the shooting death of an 11-year-old boy.

Madison County prosecutors say Ta'Mon F. Ford of Alton was convicted Tuesday after a bench trial in the 2016 death of Ronnell Jones. Prosecutors say Ronnell died at a hospital after he was shot once in the back outside a youth center in Alton.

The state's attorney's office says they believe Ford was confronting individuals in an ongoing social media dispute when he fired a 9mm handgun from a vehicle before it fled the scene on Jan. 13, 2016. They say the boy who died didn't have any connection to the dispute and was standing in a group of young people when the shooting happened.
