Chicago officials issue proposed 2017-2018 school calendar

CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago Public School officials have released a proposed 2017-2018 class calendar as parents await news on when the current school year will end.

Under the proposal released Monday, students would report for classes on Sept. 5. Classes would end on June 18, 2018.

Winter break would begin Dec. 25 and end Jan. 5. Spring break would begin March 26 and continue through March 30, 2018.

Chicago schools CEO Forrest Claypool has said classes this year could end as early as June 1, instead of June 20, because of a cash crunch. District officials blame its financial woes in part on a shortfall in anticipated state funding.

Claypool said last week he will know when classes will be dismissed after a Cook County judge rules Friday on motions filed in connection with the district's lawsuit against the state.
