Mayor nominates deputy to be next Batavia police chief

Batavia Mayor Jeff Schielke is promoting from within the ranks to fill the job of police chief.

The city announced Tuesday that Schielke has chosen Deputy Chief Daniel M. Eul to take over.

The city council will vote on the nomination Monday.

Schielke said commissioners previously agreed with him, in a closed session meeting, that the city could promote someone rather than advertise the job throughout the area, state or nation.

If approved, Eul would replace Gary Schira, who is retiring May 3. Schira has been Batavia's chief for 11 years and before that was chief of the Bloomingdale department.

Eul has been an officer for more than 20 years. He has a bachelor's degree in criminal justice management from Aurora University and a master's in public safety administration from Lewis University.

He also served 19 years as a commissioned U.S. Army Reserves officer, including a stint in Iraq.

Eul lives in Batavia.
