Aurora police investigate cop accused of domestic battery

An Aurora police officer accused of punching and biting a family member has been put on administrative duty, according to the Kane County sheriff's office.

Officer Brian Shields, 46, was charged last week with two counts of domestic battery, authorities said. Shortly after 5 p.m. April 5, Kane County sheriff's deputies went to an Aurora Township home on a report of domestic battery, Lt. Pat Gengler said.

The argument stemmed from sleeping arrangements in the house, Gengler said. The family member was taken to Presence Mercy Medical Center with injuries not considered to be serious.

Deputies arrested Shields and took him to the Kane County Judicial Center, where he was held in protective custody separate from other inmates for safety reasons, Gengler said.

Shields was released April 6 after posting $500 bail.

Aurora police Lt. Jeff Wiencek said the 12-year veteran has been put on administrative duty and surrendered his weapons while Aurora police conduct an internal investigation.

Shields' next court appearance is April 26 in Kane County.
