Baseball: Snep steps it up as Lake Zurich rolls

Tyler Snep homered twice and doubled twice, driving in 5 runs, and Lake Zurich's baseball team picked up an 11-1 win over visiting Waukegan in North Suburban Conference action Tuesday.

Snep, who finished 4-for-4, also scored 4 runs and stole 2 bases. Winning pitcher Shane Nolan allowed 1 run in 5 innings, striking out nine.

Wauconda 9, Lakes 5: Jake Harmon (2 RBI) and John Herbst (3 RBI) both went 3-for-4, as the host Bulldogs won the Northern Lake County game.

Brock Glavey, Jacob Bicknase and Alex Machon all were 2-for-4 for Wauconda (2-6, 1-1). Glavey, Bicknase and Harmon all doubled, and Trevor Sefcik was 1-for-2 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI. Danny Sperling pitched 4⅔ innings for the win. Ty Janik (0 earned runs) threw the final 2⅓ innings for the save.

Lakes got a home run from Simon Varitek and 3 doubles from Ryan Selig (3-for-4, 2 RBI).

Grant 3, Antioch 2: The visiting Bulldogs pushed across the winning run in the top of the seventh inning of the Northern Lake County game.

Winning pitcher Ben Kusiak went 2-for-3 with a double, and Jake Mitchell was 1-for-2 with 2 RBI, including one on a squeeze bunt, for Grant (6-5, 3-0).

Grant's Shawn Riley pitched 5⅓ innings, striking out six and allowing 2 earned runs.

Grayslake Central 11, Round Lake 0: Junior Clay Stoffel fanned 6 batters over 4 innings of shutout ball, as the visiting Rams won the Northern Lake County game in six innings.

Sophomore Eric Sturm and junior Jack Fortman each tossed scoreless innings in helping GC improve to 7-2. Offensively, Nic Presutti and Ben Kordek both had doubles with Presutti driving in a pair of runs. Sophomore shortstop Kevin O'Brien scored 3 runs and had an RBI hit, while Clayton Bloemke and Mike Przybylski each drove in a pair of runs with hits.

Grayslake North 7, Johnsburg 2: Pat Schaefer allowed 1 run and 4 hits over 6 innings, striking out five and walking two, as the Knights picked up the nonconference win.

Austin Delao (RBI) and Nick Lovitsch (2 RBI) each went 2-for-3 for Grayslake North. Declan Peterson had a single and 2 RBI.

New Trier 5, Vernon Hills 4: The Cougars lost their first game in Central Suburban League North action.

Vernon Hills (4-8-1) struck first, scoring two in the top of the second when Brad Larsen's double drove in courtesy runner Brian Duffley and Danny Wizceb (1-for-3). New Trier answered off starter Ryan Larsen (4IP, 2 H, 5 R, 4 ER, 6 BB, 5 K), scoring two of its own in the bottom of the frame. The Trevians scored two more in the third and one in the fourth). Joe Rangel and Duffley each pitched a scoreless inning.

The Cougars got a run back in the sixth. Drew Winegardner (2-for-3) singled, stole second and scored on two wild pitches. In the Vernon Hills seventh, Matt Gramins (2-for-3) doubled to lead off the inning. After back-to-back outs, Rangel walked and Winegardner got hit to load the bases. An errant pickoff attempt allowed Gramins to score and moved the tying run to third. But New Trier's Jack Falk struck out the final VH hitter to end the threat.
