Elgin man charged with attempted murder

An Elgin man was being held on $2 million bail Tuesday after being charged with attempted murder.

John C. Hawkins, 22, of the 900 block of Bellevue Avenue, was arrested after officers responded to a call about a domestic dispute at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, and found a 19-year-old woman with multiple stab wounds, Elgin police said.

A man, later identified as Hawkins, fled on foot and was taken into custody after officers searched for him with the assistance of a police dog.

The woman was taken to the hospital where she was treated for serious injuries. Hawkins suffered an injury to his chin when he jumped from the second floor of the house and landed on a fence, police said.

Hawkins was charged with attempted murder, two counts of armed violence, and two counts of aggravated domestic battery, according to police and court records.

He appeared in Kane County bond court Tuesday.
