Girls water polo: Prospect handles Hersey's challenge
Prospect's girls water polo team stretched its lead in the Mid-Suburban East to 2 games by defeating its closest pursuer, Hersey, 9-5 on Monday.
Senior Gracie Dix was a force for the Knights, scoring 8 goals during the first three quarters. According to coach Natalie Tucker, Dix is scoring on 70 percent of her shot attempts this season.
Mary Clare McAleer came up with 19 saves for the Knights, who improved to 13-3 overall and 6-0 in the division.
Hersey, which got 3 goals from Madison Burkhalter, slipped to 13-2 overall and 4-2 in the league despite a much closer game against Prospect than the first time they'd met (an 8-2 Prospect win). The Huskies are now tied for second place in the East standings with Buffalo Grove.
Barrington 13, Schaumburg 11: The Saxons came up with 5 goals in the fourth quarter, but the Fillies were able to protect the lead they'd earned, along with their top position in the MSL West standings.
Barrington (11-1, 6-0) got 3 goals apiece from Jackie West, Nicole Runtz and Andrea Potgieter.
Sidney Rosenblum and Hannah Pearson had 3 scores each for Schaumburg (10-5, 3-3).
Buffalo Grove 8, Wheeling 3: Dasha Yermol had 5 goals to help the visiting Bison reach the .500 mark overall and improved to 4-2 in the East.
Holly Schroeder got all 3 of the goals for the Wildcats.
Conant 12, Palatine 2: Olivia Olszewski led the visiting Cougars with 4 goals, and Paulina Chowaniec had 2 goals, 3 steals and generated 2 ejections as Conant (9-4, 4-1) remained 1 game off the West-leading pace set by Barrington.
Kaley Mockus and Martika Theis had the goals for Palatine.
Conant got a 16-save effort from senior goalie Cam Rosas.
Elk Grove 8, Rolling Meadows 7 (2 OT): The Grens got the decisive goal from Kaylee Hatfield in the fourth OT session after both teams scored once in the first OT period.
Leading the way for Elk Grove (4-8, 2-4) were Hatfield (3 goals) and Alyssa Bonilla and Hannah Sallenback (2 apiece).
Bonilla also had 2 assists and 5 steals, while Hatfield came up with 4 steals and goalie Melena Herrera stop 15 shots and also had an assist.
Maggie Goodwin led the way for Rolling Meadows (5-10, 2-4) with 4 goals, and Betsy Zanocco had 2.
Loyola 12, St. Viator 9: Ritarose Battin led the scoring effort for the Lions with 4 goals as St. Viator (4-8, 1-5) suffered a loss in MCAC play. Zoe Green and Paige Laskiewicz both scored twice for the Lions.
