Celebrate National Library Week with Algonquin Library District

From April 9-15, the Algonquin Area Public Library District will celebrate National Library Week 2017 with programs, events, and a special community project.

Everyone is invited to celebrate how "Libraries Transform" the communities they serve.

On Tuesday, April 4, Algonquin Village President John Schmitt and the village board proclaimed April 9-15 National Library Week in the village.

The board encourages all residents to make full use of the services, resources, and staff expertise at both locations.

Library fans of all ages are invited to participate in the National Library Week community art project by decorating individual canvas "tiles" that will be assembled into a mosaic representing Van Gogh's "Starry Night."

Families can drop in on Sunday, April 9, from 1 to 4 p.m. to decorate a tile - or kids can attend tile decorating classes during the week. Visit www.aapld.org/do to register.

Parents and/or caregivers can bring the kids to either library location during this week to guess how many candies in the library's jar … and maybe win the entire jar of candy. Children can also celebrate by decorating and bring home a "high-five" paper hand - and be entered to win a $25 gift card.

Other activities include a Dance Party for families, a kids' "tour" of Turkey, a pediatric therapeutic playgroup, the Neighborhood Memory Café for older adults, "Chicago True Stories" with historical impersonator Martina Mathisen, and many story times. Visit calendar at www.aapld.org/do.

During National Library Wee, library staff who donate $5 or more will have the privilege of wearing jeans to work. Proceeds will go to Environmental Defenders of McHenry County, an organization dedicated to the preservation and improvement of the natural environment in McHenry County, and committed to building sound ecological relationships between people and the natural world.

National Library Wee began in 1958 as a national observance sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country each April to celebrate what libraries bring to their communities and to promote library use and support. It's a great week to stop in and learn more about the library - from how to get a library card (it's easy!) to how to use your library 24/7.

Celebrate everything libraries and library staff do for their community! Your library provides access to technology programs, online learning resources, books, DVDs, vocational training, study rooms, crafting workshops and much, much more. Libraries offer opportunity to all. Libraries transform.

The Algonquin Area Public Library District has approximately 23,000 cardholders and serves more than 40,000 residents in a 30-square-mile area including portions of Algonquin, Lake in the Hills, Cary, and Barrington Hills.
