U.S. fires missiles at Syria
The United States blasted a Syrian air base with a barrage of cruise missiles last night in fiery retaliation for this week's gruesome chemical weapons attack against civilians. "My preliminary briefing by the White House indicated that this was a measured response to the Syrian nerve gas atrocity," Sen. Dick Durbin said. "Any further action will require close scrutiny by Congress, and any escalation beyond airstrikes or missile strikes will require engaging the American people in that decision." Full story.

The Cook County clerk's office ruled Thursday that Anisha Patel, the top vote-getter in the Arlington Heights Elementary District 25 school board race, lives within the district, despite the fact her own ballot contained the race for neighboring Elk Grove Township Elementary District 59. Three injured in crash near Round Lake
One person was critically injured and two others were also hurt when a Ford Contour collided head-on with a semitrailer truck near Round Lake yesterday afternoon, police said. The crash happened about 2 p.m. on Route 120 west of Wilson Road, Lake County sheriff's police said. Full story.
Kildeer Village Square opens with Nordstrom Rack, DSW
Nordstrom Rack and Designer Shoe Warehouse kicked off Thursday's opening of a new mall on Rand Road in Kildeer. Bill inspired by Mount Prospect crosswalk death sails through House
Legislation toughening penalties for drivers who hit pedestrians at crosswalks cleared the Illinois House and moved to the Senate. The legislation was inspired by the death of Mount Prospect cyclist Joni Beaudry. She died June 9, after being hit by an SUV driver at a Mount Prospect crosswalk with a rectangular rapid-flashing beacon. The driver paid $364 in fines and court costs. Full story.
Women's sports pioneer from Hoffman Estates dies at 91
Katharine "Kotch" Kowell was one of the last surviving members of the Parichy Bloomer Girls professional team that won the National Girls Baseball Championship in 1947 and drew legions of fans from throughout the Chicago area. Kowell, who lived in Hoffman Estates, died March 30. She was 91. Full story.
