CFC celebrates Earth Day in a big way

Citizens for Conservation will hold a week of Earth Day celebrations at local schools and at local nature preserves.

Among CFC's activities are:

• Thursday, April 20: 9-11 a.m. Restoration morning; breakfast and special prizes will be provided. Meet at CFC headquarters, 459 E. Hwy. 22, Barrington.

• Saturday, April 22: 9 a.m.-noon. Earth Day at Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve. Join CFC to plant hundreds of sedges at the preserve. Volunteers will include students from Barrington Middle School-Prairie Campus and Barrington High School, as well as many adult volunteers. Light lunch and CFC Earth Day souvenirs will be available.

• Sunday, April 23: 1-3 p.m. Open House and Tour of Flint Creek Savanna. Learn about CFC's Barrington Greenways Initiative and enjoy a guided trail walk.

CFC's Youth and Young Adult Education Committee will visit Barrington schools during the week. Visits include:

• April 18: Barrington High School: Presentation to biology classes.

• April 19: Countryside Elementary: Outdoor nature scavenger hunts and activities.

• April 20 and 21: Barrington Middle School-Station Campus: PALS students explore nature and work at Baker's Lake.

• April 22: Barrington Middle School-Prairie Campus: Planet Heroes workathon; students will plant sedges at Cuba Marsh Forest Preserve.

• April 27: Roslyn Road Elementary: Bee assembly presented by CFC's Ted Krasnesky.

CFC's activities in Barrington schools are part of long-term partnerships and sponsorships that include the startup of a butterfly garden at Roslyn Road School and work with Barrington High School life sciences students focusing on local ecosystems and biodiversity, as well as CFC's annual Third Graders on the Prairie program.
