Softball: Wheeling rallies past Lake Forest

With her team trailing 7-5 in the top of seventh inning, Wheeling freshman Peyton LaCaeyse belted 2-run triple for the game-winning RBI as the Wildcats took a 9-7 nonconference softball win at Lake Forest on Thursday.

Wheeling, which collected 13 hits, built a 5-2 lead before Lake Forest scored 3 in bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to grab the 7-5 advantage.

LaCaeyse (3-for-4, 2 RBI, run), sophomore Becky McAtee (2-for-4, RBI), junior Veronica Petzold (2-for-4, 2 runs, RBI) and sophomore Nikki Ferraro (2-for-4, RBI, run) each collected multiple hits for the Wildcats.

Freshman Emmie LaCaeyse (2-1) earned the win by tossing a 7-hitter with 8 strikeouts.

Barrington 11, McHenry 1 (5 inn.): Junior Abbey Jacobsen (2-for-2, 3 RBI) belted 2 home runs and senior Haley Luczak (2-for-2, RBI, 3 runs) had one for the Fillies, who improved to 7-1 behind winning pitcher Catherine McMahon (5-1), a junior who struck out four and did not give up an earned run in 4 innings. Fillies sophomore reliever Tori Meyer retired the side in order in the fifth.

Other top hitters for Barrington were senior Rachel Krzysko (1-for-2, triple, 2 RBI) and junior Julia Kozar (1-for-2, 2 RBI). Sophomore teammate Kendall Peterson reached base all three times and stole four bases.

Palatine 4, Cary Grove 1: Junior Sarah Grossman (2-0) struck out 14 and threw a 5-hitter as the Pirates improved to 2-1 with the nonconference win in Cary.

Sophomore Amanda Stanczuk (3-for- 4, double, RBI), junior Maddie Craver (2-for-4, triple, 2 RBI, run) and junior Brittany Padden (1-for-2, double, walk, 1 run) led the offense for Palatine.

Padden got her first varsity hit, a double to right center, and scored on a single by Craver for Palatine's first run in the third inning.

Grossman helped her own cause in the sixth inning with the game-winning RBI with sacrifice fly to center that scored sophomore Emily Parrott.

The Pirates added its final 2 runs in the seventh when Padden walked to start the inning. She went to second on sophomore Grace Huff's sacrifice bunted and came home on Craver's triple. Craver then scored on an error.

Rolling Meadows 12, Elgin 2 (5 inn.): Making her varsity debut, sophomore Kendra Herring went the first three innings, striking out seven and allowing 3 hits for her first win. Classmate Elise Kowalski went the final two innings, striking out one and not allowing a hit.

Sophomore Sara Benner (2-for-3, double), senior Paige Connor (2-for-2, 3 RBI, double), junior Mallory King (2-for-4, 2 RBI) and sophomore Caroline Slowik (3-for-3, 2 RBI) led the offense for the host Mustangs (3-1).
