Medical office expansion clears parking hurdle in Naperville

A medical office in Naperville is cleared to nearly double its space despite putting some parking spaces closer than required by code to a major road.

DuPage Medical Group gained city council permission to build a 21,000-square-foot addition to the 26,000-square-foot office it has operated since 2007 at 808 Rickert Drive, just south of Ogden Avenue.

The addition requires the company to provide 96 more parking spaces to the 142 the site already offers, meaning some of them will be set back only 10 feet from the property line along Ogden Avenue. The city's zoning code normally mandates 20 feet of separation.

Bill Novack, director of transportation, engineering and development, said he has no safety concerns about the proximity of parking to the road. With the way the property line lays out, he said the spaces are about 11 feet from the sidewalk along Ogden and won't be out of character from the parking situation at other businesses in the area.

City council members, who unanimously approved DuPage Medical Group's expansion plans over a 5-3 denial from the planning and zoning commission, said the larger office will be an upgrade from the hair salon that currently sits on part of the site.

The medical group bought the salon at 2052 W. Ogden Ave. last October to facilitate its expansion. It plans to use the site largely for parking to accommodate the five spots per 1,000 square feet of building space required by city code.

"I think it's going to be a beautiful addition to the city," council member Patty Gustin said.

DuPage Medical Group already offers audiology; radiology; ophthalmology; lab services; a sleep center; ear, nose and throat services; and facial, plastic and reconstructive surgery at its Rickert Drive facility. Once the addition is complete, expanded radiology will be available along with primary care, obstetrics and gynecology.
