Maglio bests Domke in Roselle mayor's race

Village Trustee Andrew Maglio appeared poised late Tuesday to replace Roselle Mayor Gayle Smolinski, who's retiring as DuPage County's longest-serving mayor after nearly 24 years in office.

Maglio had 1,611 votes, leading fellow Trustee Wayne Domke, who had 1,228 votes according to unofficial returns reported in both DuPage and Cook counties. Of the 27 precincts in the race, 23 are located in DuPage County and four in Cook County.

Maglio was elected to the village board in 2009 after more than two decades on the village's planning and zoning commission. Domke served as a Roselle Park District commissioner from 1999 to 2011 before joining the village board.

During his campaign Maglio touted his ability to combine his historical knowledge of the village with a still-fresh perspective. He said his experience in planning and zoning gives him an understanding of why decisions were made and why ideas sometimes didn't work.

His 13 years as chairman of the commission also gave him experience in running meetings, he said, along with listening to residents' concerns and building consensus.

He said one of his primary focuses in offices will be to convene a community panel to review the village's building codes to recommend improvements and then to make sure those codes are fairly enforced.

During his campaign Domke said he was running to give residents and business owners a fresh vision and a chance to "re-imagine Roselle." He said he wanted to increase communication and transparency by televising or streaming village board meetings; conducting more town-hall sessions; and implementing biannual resident satisfaction surveys.

The village recently approved a two-year strategic plan and a five-year capital plan and Maglio said he wants to keep moving in that "positive trajectory."

Voters are also electing three trustees from among a six-person field that featured incumbent Patrick Devitt and newcomers Terrell Barnes, Brian Boos, Christopher Gnutek, David Pileski and Heather Pransky. With all 27 precincts counted late Tuesday, Devitt, Pileski and Pransky were poised to win.
