Oakton joins YWCA to host violence prevention workshop

Oakton Community College and YWCA Evanston/North Shore will host a continuing education workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Thursday, April 27, at the college's Des Plaines campus, 1600 E. Golf Road (rooms 1604-1610).

The event provides an opportunity for social workers, professional counselors, psychologists, addictions counselors, marriage and family therapists, teachers, occupational therapists and other professionals to learn more about how to engage men as allies in preventing gender violence.

Jackson Katz, a cultural therapist renowned for his activism on issues of gender, race and violence, will present "Taking It Personally: Why Gender Violence is an Issue for All Men."

Katz is the co-founder of Mentors in Violence Prevention, a long running and influential violence prevention program in North America. He is the key architect of the "bystander" deterrence approach to sexual assault and relationship abuse used in sports culture and the military.

Participants will be introduced to a host of topics including: MVP's model for general violence, bullying and gay-bashing prevention; new ways to think, talk and write about gender violence; how to incorporate critical media literacy skills to gender violence prevention efforts; and techniques to approach gender violence in racially and culturally competent methods.

Prior to the workshop, participants can enjoy a continental breakfast and networking opportunities starting at 8:30 a.m. Space is limited. Advanced registration is recommended. Before April 10, cost is $80; after April 10, $90. Attendees will be eligible for continuing education credits in cultural competency.
