MCC marks 50 years of education

McHenry County College in Crystal Lake will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a series of events throughout the year.

The celebration kicks off with a Golden Homecoming from 3 to 6 p.m. April 11 for students, alumni, current and former employees, retirees, and current and former board members. Guests will learn about MCC's future plans including its latest initiative, the Liebman Science Center, scheduled to open in 2018. They also can immerse themselves in the walking timeline and preview the 50th anniversary documentary.

“After 50 years, we want to reflect on and celebrate our rich history and also envision the progress we hope to make in higher education for the next 50 years,” said Christina Haggerty, interim vice president of institutional advancement. “We are committed to developing successful citizens who contribute to the future success of the community.”

The college hosts the MCC Scots Fest, a free interactive arts festival and car show from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 10. It will feature MCC music ensembles, Strikers Drum Line, Pots & Pans, storyteller Jim May, a children's activities area, and interactive art demonstrations by MCC faculty and students. Food trucks will be on hand and Star Radio 105.5-FM will broadcast live.

Community members can view the historic visual timeline, which will be on display throughout the year in the corridor between Buildings B and C on campus.

MCC also will participate in the Crystal Lake Fourth of July Parade July 2, and a Friends of MCC Foundation Gala is planned Nov. 10.

Other anniversary events include a fall opening day celebration, a multi-chamber mixer, MCC Night and the winter commencement. For more information, visit mchenry.edu/50.
