Chicago bluesman Brooks dead at 83

Lonnie Brooks, a blues guitarist and singer who found fame in Chicago, died Saturday at age 83.

A Facebook post from family member Wayne Baker Brooks announced the news Sunday, and asked well-wishes to "please respect the family's privacy during this time of grief." Funeral arrangements are pending.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel released a statement published by ABC 7 Chicago, calling Brooks "a Chicago blues legend with a towering talent and soulful style that won him legions of fans across the country and around the world."

Brooks, born Dec. 18, 1933, recorded his first album, "Broke and Hungry," in 1969 under the name Guitar Junior, has been a headliner for the Chicago Blues Festival, and even appeared alongside star Dan Aykroyd and fellow bluesman Junior Wells in the movie sequel "Blues Brothers 2000."
