Gateway Park upgrades rejected in Rolling Meadows

Citing high costs, Rolling Meadows aldermen have formally rejected bids for a project to spruce up Gateway Park on the northwest corner of Kirchoff and Wilke roads.

The city council has been talking since 2013 about adding memorial benches, a bike rack, lighting, a parking lot, and a new electrical sign to the park, which serves as a main entrance to the city from the east. But bids opened last month were far above the $85,000 budgeted; the lowest came in at $150,000. That prompted aldermen to vote unanimously this week to reject all eight bids, effectively scraping the project.

City Manager Barry Krumstok said a smaller in-house project to repair lights would come back to the council for approval.
