Referendum foes stuck on one issue

The issue of the Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 referendum, looking to secure bonds to make improvements to the schools in the district, is causing quite the stir on social media.

There is a slate of four candidates opposing this referendum, which is understandable. However, their focus is singular in nature, "Vote No on the referendum."

If you go to their Facebook pages, you will see they are short on solutions and don't have specific, actionable plans to address the needs of the district. They are also extremely critical of the current board and school administration. If elected, it will be difficult for any of the candidates on this slate to effectively work with the current board and administration, given their antagonistic stance and personal attacks of these folks.

If you go to the sites for incumbents Brad Paulsen and Jim Mathieson, you will see specific accomplishments and a track record that speaks for itself. Candidate Rob Hanlon will bring a depth of experience in Information Technology, a deep involvement in the schools, and a passion for making things better. Candidate Ginna Ericksen has been heavily involved in the schools as well, and her firsthand experience of the issues the schools are facing will bring additional balance to the board.

We are fortunate to live in District 200 and have some of the best schools in the state. This is due, in no small part, to an outstanding School Board and Administration. We need to continue this outstanding track record, and the best way to ensure that is to vote "yes" on the school referendum and to cast your vote for Brad Paulsen, Jim Mathieson, Rob Hanlon and Ginna Ericksen, No. 1, 2, 3 and 8 on the ballot, on April 4, or if you cast an early ballot.
