Kane County Recycles event set for April 1 in St. Charles

The next Kane County Recycles event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 1, behind the Kane County Circuit Clerk's Office, 540 S. Randall Road, St. Charles.

The next date is set for May 13.

The April 1 event will include recycling electronics, books paint and free confidential document shredding. You can recycle electronics such as computers, keyboards, laptops, printers, televisions of any size or age, stereos, cellphones, microwaves, Christmas lights, and more. Items will be unloaded for you.

A complete list of accepted items and more information can be found here at www.countyofkane.org/Recycling/.

Most electronic items can be dropped off for free, everything except for TVs and monitors, which have a cost.

Cost for TVs and monitors TVs and computer monitors - both tube and flat screen - have a fee of $25 for screens under 21 inches, measured diagonally, and $35 for screens 21 inches and larger. The fee may be paid online in advance or on-site with cash or card. Exact change is appreciated.

The fee that you pay for screened equipment goes directly to the county's contracted electronics recycler, eWorks, a nonprofit whose main mission is to employ developmentally disabled individuals.

Books of any age and condition, paperback or hardcover will be accepted for reuse and recycling.

Liquid latex paint and oil paint will be accepted at this event. Paint also has a recycling fee per container, payable by the resident with cash or check. It is $2 per pint, $3.50 per gallon, and $10 per 5-gallon bucket.

Latex paint is nontoxic but difficult to dispose of normally because you have to dry it out before placing it in your landfill trash. However, it can be easily recycled into new products with no drying out necessary.

Oil paint is now accepted at the event, for a per-can cost of $6 per gallon and $25 per 5-gallon bucket. This is for convenience only; note, you can drop off oil paint at the Naperville HHW facility for free. Cash or check only for the paint, please.

Bring your confidential documents in paper bags or boxes. Limit is four boxes. This is for residents only. No documents from businesses will be accepted. More guidelines can be found at www.countyofkane.org/recycling/pages/confidentialDocument.aspx
