State seeks volunteers for Lincoln's New Salem historic site

PETERSBURG, Ill. (AP) - The Illinois Historic Preservation Agency is looking for volunteers to help recreate life in the 1830s log village where Abraham Lincoln lived for six years as a young adult.

Lincoln's New Salem State Historic Site is located about two miles south of Petersburg and 20 miles northwest of Springfield. The side includes a reconstructed village, complete with a blacksmith, a rail splitter, homes and a country store.

Volunteers are needed to dress in period clothing, staff the visitor center or help with special events.

A training session for volunteers is scheduled at the historic preservation agency's Springfield office on April 1. There also will be training sessions at Lincoln's New Salem on March 30 and April 1.
