Northeastern Illinois: Jarrett to give commencement speech

CHICAGO (AP) - One of former President Barack Obama's closest aides will be the commencement speaker for Northeastern Illinois University.

Officials from the Chicago campus announced Tuesday that Valerie Jarrett will deliver the address in May. School officials say she will also be awarded an honorary doctorate degree.

Jarrett served as a senior adviser during both of Obama's terms. Before Jarrett's White House tenure, her jobs included chairman of the board of the Chicago Stock Exchange and former CEO of a real estate development firm. She also served as chairman of the University of Chicago Medical Center Board of Trustees.

About 10,000 students attend the public university in Chicago. The graduation ceremony will take place May 8.
