Elgin Twp. tax vote would help seniors

I am writing this letter to express my support for the upcoming Elgin Township referendum to assist seniors in the community.

I personally have found Elgin Senior Services a great help for my late wife and me. It helped her when she received her Medicare card and eased the transition when she became eligible for government benefits. I have used their free tax preparation service, and their Information and Assistance staff got me covered under Medicaid.

The tax rate is very small - 0.025 percent. What this means to a home assessed at $100,000 is a mere $8.33 added to the annual tax bill. And passage of the tax would bring in over $400,000 to be shared among the many senior programs and initiatives in the township, a very small price to pay for such a great cause.

It will help seniors deal with conditions like the loss of a spouse, Alzheimer's, deteriorating health and the ability to remain in their home without help.
