Northwest Symphony Orchestra visits 'Idyllic Places'

Northwest Symphony Orchestra, under the direction of music director and conductor Kim Diehnelt, and featuring oboe soloist Joni Day, presents "Idyllic Places.""

The concert will be at 3:30 p.m. April 2 in the auditorium of the Forest View Education Center, 2121 S. Goebbert Road, Arlington Heights.

Diehnelt's preconcert commentary begins at 2:45 p.m. in the auditorium. The concert is being held in partnership with the D214 Community Education Program.

A featured work is "Caprio,"a composition by Diehnelt herself. The piece opens with a plaintive melody in the solo oboe, which is then elaborated upon by the orchestra.

Soloist Joni Day performed the world premiere of "Caprio" with the Waukegan Symphony Orchestra in October 2011.

Two orchestral songs by the late 19th/early 20th century British composer Edward Elgar bookend "Caprio."

"Chanson de matin (morning)" and "Chanson de nuit (night)" were originally written for violin and piano, but later orchestrated by the composer to take advantage of all the tonal colors available in this expanded form.

Also on the program is English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams' "Symphony No. 5," written from 1938-1943 in the romantic style.

Tickets are $20, $15 for seniors, $10 for students and free for children younger than 14 when accompanied by a paying adult.

Tickets will be available at the door by cash, check, or credit card, or may be purchased in advance at www.northwestsymphony.org using Brown Paper Tickets, or by credit card by calling the box office, (847) 718-7702, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
