Local trivia buffs swarm to Literacy Bee

Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley hosted its annual Trivia Bee for Literacy Saturday, March 25, at Pheasant Run Resort in St. Charles.

This year's theme was "Birds and the Bees." Questions tested participants general knowledge with a special emphasis on answers relating to birds, bees and love.

Approximately 200 participants and spectators gathered to support local literacy, which has faced continuing funding obstacles due to the state budget gridlock.

Individuals and corporations showed their support by sponsoring teams, donating time and money to offset the cost of the hosting the event or contributing assistance with publicity, as well as donating and bidding on silent auctions items. Some noteworthy items up for auction included a 30-minute airplane ride for two over the Fox Valley, Landscape Designs by O'Bryant Designs, golf for four at Tanna Farms, donated by Paul Ruby, and a one-year membership to the Morton Arboretum, in addition to numerous gift baskets from local businesses and gift certificates to restaurants, massages, and shows.

Three-person teams competing in the trivia competition chose punny names based on this year's theme.

Entrants included: Rockin' Robins (Accenture), We Hive the Answers (American Association of University Women), and Educated Fleas (Elgin Community College).

The winner for "Best Team Name" went to Let's Get Ready to Bumble (St. Charles Public Library sponsored by Friends of the St. Charles Public Library). Team Spirit award went to Bees in our Bonnets (Altrusa International of Fox Valley), who sported lovely bee-themed hats.

Third place went to Let's dUU It (Let's Fall in Love) of the Unitarian Universalist Society of Geneva. Second prize went to Breakfast at Triviabee's, sponsored by Nameplate and Panel Technology of Carol Stream.

First-place winners were the Know-It-Owls of Batavia Public Library, sponsored by Friends of the Batavia Public Library.

Prizes were donated by Classic Cinemas, St. Charles Dairy Queen, Trader Joe's, with the grand prize being Geneva Commerce gift certificates, donated by Strohschein Law Group. Winners' caps were donated by Liz Prignano of Budokan Martial Arts and Fitness. Trophies were donated by Doc Morgan Inc.

Proceeds from this year's event will help support hundreds of adults in the Fox Valley area learn to read, write, understand, and speak English through free one-to-one tutoring from Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley.

The program is accredited by ProLiteracy, the largest nongovernmental organization of adult basic education and literacy programs in the world. Only 400 out of 1,200 affiliates have achieved this designation. Literacy Volunteers Fox Valley has helped thousands of people achieve greater success in life through adult literacy since it was established in 1986.
