Two men charged in Carpentersville heroin bust

Two Carpentersville men were being held on $4 million bail each, accused of possessing 3 kilograms of heroin.

Mario Betancourt, 37, and Misael Oropez-Garcia, 31, were arrested Wednesday by Carpentersville police.

Police and Drug Enforcement Administration officers searched the men's homes Wednesday. They found 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) of heroin in the 0-99 block of Wren Road and 1 kilogram (2.2 pounds) in the 2100 block of Morningside Lane.

The heroin is worth about $400,000, according to police, who said they also seized more than $10,000 in cash.

The two are charged with manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance in excess of 900 grams, which is a Class X felony punishable by up to 30 years in prison.

They were also charged with possession of a controlled substance in excess of 900 grams, which is a lesser felony.

Their next court date is at 9 a.m. April 5 at the Kane County Judicial Center.

Police declined to say anything else about the arrest, such as what led them to suspect the two or how long they had investigated them.

Misael Oropez-Garcia of Carpentersville faces up to 30 years in prison if convicted of manufacture/delivery of a controlled substance in excess of 900 grams.
