Baseball: Wheeling, Vernon Hills battle to 5-5 tie

Darkness was the only winner Thursday in the nonconference baseball matchup between Wheeling and Vernon Hills.

Both teams scored 3 runs in the seventh inning before darkness ended the contest with the score tied 5-5.

Jack Splett finished 3-for-3, and Andy Shover (double) and Bryan Niznik both had 2 hits for the Wildcats (1-1-1).

Wheeling starter Josh Boesen completed 5 innings and allowed 5 hits and 2 runs.

Cary-Grove 3, Fremd 0: Cary-Grove's baseball team scored 3 runs in the top of the seventh inning to leave Palatine with a 3-0 victory over Fremd in nonconference play Thursday.

Will McCabe and Mark Bechtold both had 2 singles and were the only runners to reach base for the Vikings (1-1).

Trojans starter Matt McCumber pitched 4 innings and allowed 2 hits, but reliever Ryan Ignoffo earned the victory.

Fremd starter Tom Narey allowed 1 hit and no runs in 3 innings.

Crystal Lake South 9, Barrington 3: The host Broncos led briefly after scoring twice in the first inning, but the Gators finished with 9 hits, drew 8 walks and took advantage of 4 Barrington errors to pick up a nonconference win.

The Broncos (1-1) were held to 4 singles as starter Brooks Gosswein (2 IP, 1 earned run) took the loss.

Addison Trail 5, Maine West 2: The visiting Warriors got doubles from Nick Stone and Alex Paschols but committed 4 errors in dropping their season opener.

Matt Willett took the loss after allowing 1 unearned run on 3 hits over 3 innings.

St. Charles East 5, Conant 0: Tim Fauth and Mason Sykes had 2 hits apiece for host Conant, but the visiting Saints used four pitchers to keep the Cougars (0-3) scoreless in nonconference play.

Glenbrook South 5, Rolling Meadows 2: The host Mustangs were held to 3 hits by three Titans pitchers in a nonconference loss at home.

Nate Pardini doubled and scored for Meadows (0-3).

Huntley 10, St. Viator 0 (5 inn.): Cameron Reed allowed just 2 hits with 6 strikeouts and 1 walk for Huntley (2-0) in a nonconference win.

Hunter Johnson and Alex Prazuch had the hits for St. Viator (2-1) as starter Cole Kmet suffered the loss.

York 6, Hoffman Estates 4: Dylan Bloom homered, doubled and drew 2 walks, but visiting York came from behind with 3 runs in the sixth and 3 more in the seventh to pick up a nonconference win and spoil the Hawks' season opener.

Jim Kliver had 2 hits for Hoffman Estates, and Jimmy Burks had a double.
