Baseball: Vernon Hills rallies for tie
An exciting nonconference baseball game was called due to darkness, with Wheeling and Vernon Hills tied at 5-5 Thursday.
Down 5-3 with 2 outs and darkness closing in, Vernon Hills got a clutch play from Kyle Fasdinder. He drilled a shot into the gap to score both Joe Rangel and Drew Winegardner knotting the score at 5-5. Tony Brown then flew out to left field and the game was called.
Rangel, Nick Marras and Kyle Fasbinder each had 2 hits for Vernon Hills.
Grayslake Central 11, Richmond-Burton 1: Sophomore Nic Presutti led off the game with a triple and the visiting Rams rode that early momentum to a nonconference victory in their season opener.
Benton Troehler added 3 singles to Grayslake Central's 9-hit parade while Ben Kordek and Tony Neuman added doubles.
Troehler, Presutti and Kyle Allen each scored 2 runs for the Rams.
