Waukegan man charged in attempted bank robbery

A suspect has been charged in an attempted robbery of a Waukegan bank.

According to a police report, officers were called Wednesday afternoon to the area of TCF bank on the 900 block of North Green Bay Road after a report of a man with a gun. Witnesses provided a description, and a few blocks away officers spotted Connie Downey, 68, of the 300 block of Lake Street in Waukegan.

Police captured Downey after a short chase and recovered a fake gun, according to the police report.

Authorities said Downey had entered TCF Bank with the fake gun in his hand but left without taking money.

Downey is also a suspect in Tuesday's attempted armed robbery of the Associated Bank at 1 S. Genesee St., the report said.

Downey has been charged with one count of attempted armed robbery and one count of intent to commit bank larceny.
