Five reasons to oppose referendum

Fool me once, the old saying goes, and shame on you. Fool me twice, three times, four times, and want to hoodwink me five times and you must be the Kane County Forest Preserve District asking for $50 million in a referendum question on the ballot April 4.

Here are the top five reasons to vote no.

Our property taxes are too high as it is. If you vote no, the average tax bill for a $250,000 house will go down approximately $100, due to retiring debt. KCFPD previous referendums have netted them over a quarter of a billion dollars. It's time to say enough is enough.

KCFPD is accountable for three forest preserves being damaged by the five-mile long, four-lane Longmeadow toll bridge. They actively worked to broker this additional waste of taxpayer funds that plows through the Brunner Forest Preserve (purchased for $40 million). The project completely destroys forest preserve land off the Fox River and results in loss of habitat and ancient trees.

All the money won't be used to preserve land. Some of the funds, as in previous referendums, will be used for "capital improvements."

KCFPD promotes bow hunting on forest preserve lands, resulting in dangerous situations for the 94 percent of the population that doesn't hunt. Bow hunting results in cruel, agonizing deaths for deer, making KCFPD the worst stewards ever.

KCFPD allows for profit businesses to operate on our public lands. For example, they are allowing debris from the Longmeadow project to be dumped in a forest preserve on the Fox River to build a new ski hill "improvement" to benefit a for profit business.

Don't trust them. Vote no.
