Centro director to talk Sunday at Highland Avenue Church

In an effort to understand the situation of immigrants in Elgin, the Highland Avenue Church of the Brethren has invited Jaime Garcia to speak to members during the church school hour at 11 a.m. Sunday, March 26.

Garcia is the executive director of Centro de Informacion. He will focus on the effect on immigrants, both documented and undocumented, of the presidential executive order on immigration.

Centro is a nonprofit Hispanic social service agency founded in 1972, now celebrating 45 years of service in Elgin and the greater Fox Valley area. Its mission is to "empower Hispanics with the ability to effectively integrate into our greater community through the facilitation of information, education, citizenship, and well-being." It offers bilingual advocacy, information and referral, immigration and naturalization services, parenting skills training, community education, and youth programs.

Members of the Highland Avenue congregation are deeply concerned about immigration and issued this invitation to Garcia as part of their larger commitment on matters of peace and social justice. Members of the wider community are invited, as always. The church is located at 783 W. Highland Ave. in Elgin. For details, call the church at (847) -741-5124 or visit www.hacob.org.

Centro de Informacion will celebrate its 45th anniversary with an open house 4:30 to 7 p.m. April 11. Centro de Informacion is located 28 N. Grove Ave., Suite 200, in downtown Elgin. For information, call (847) 695-9050 or visit www.centrodeinformacion.org.
