Boys volleyball: Lake Zurich starts with win over BG

Alex Krasowski slammed 8 kills, Bartosz Wielgos added 6 kills and 6 aces, and Lake Zurich's boys volleyball team opened its season with a 25-19, 25-23 win over Buffalo Grove on Wednesday night.

Jeff Carmody dished out 21 assists for the Bears, who also got 5 kills from Jake Gorey.

Libertyville d. Hersey: Jack Stevens delivered 13 kills and 2 aces, Ryan Hirschel had 24 assists and 4 kills, and the Wildcats won 25-23, 26-24 in nonconference action.

"Our boys did a nice job gaining control of the game, despite a slow start in each set," Libertyville coach Jenny Smith said. "Jack Stevens controlled our offense, Ryan Hirschel did a nice job spreading the ball around, and Sam Kharasch kept us in the game with tremendous defense and leadership throughout the match."

Kharasch, the Wildcats' libero, had 16 digs and 2 assists. Libertyville's other contributors included Steven Donovan (4 digs), Drew Fortini (3 kills, 4 digs), Shane Feiereisel (4 kills) and Brendan Cook (6 kills, 2 digs).

Glenbrook South d. Vernon Hills: The Cougars fell 20-25, 25-23, 25-21 in their season opener.

Jake Adkisson and Derrick Jones each had 5 kills for Vernon Hills.

"The guys put up a great fight tonight, especially considering how many new starters we had out there - guys new to varsity," Cougars coach Chris Curry said. "We need to play more aggressively late in sets, be less afraid to make mistakes. Overall, though, it was a really instructive night."

Jake Fiarito dished out 21 assists for Vernon Hills and served 2 aces. Sammy Adkisson had 15 digs.

"Jake Fiarito was especially impressive tonight," Curry said of his senior setter. "You couldn't tell he had only one hitter back from last year's team. His play-calling was smart, he served tough, and he really set the tone on the floor."

Warren d. Lakes: Mihajlo Gomez had 6 kills, as the Blue Devils won 25-19, 25-13 in nonconference action.

Warren (2-0) also got 3 kills apiece from Hector Heraz, Brett Bauer and Kyle Wells. Gavin Glickley lofted 19 assists, while Wells served 3 aces. Matt Daniel and Brett Bauer had 4 and 3 digs, respectively. Heraz also had 6 blocks and Brett Bauer posted three.

Lakes (0-2) was led by Chris Leyva with 5 kills and 1 block and Matthew Haufe with 3 kills.

Evanston d. Mundelein: The Mustangs lost 25-17, 25-18 in nonconference play, despite Linden Ewing's 6 kills.
