Girls soccer: Kubin powers Lake Zurich's first victory

Rebecca Kubin scored 4 goals, and Lake Zurich's girls soccer team beat visiting McHenry 8-1 Tuesday night for its first win of the season.

Kristin Brousseau added a goal and 3 assists for the Bears (1-2), who led 6-0 at halftime. Morgan Long, Rachel Krueger and Erin Neeson scored as well. Maddy Piggott, Anna Biergans and Kyra Ripoli contributed assists.

Warren 2, Lakes 0: Alissa Ramsden and Rebecca Pineau scored goals, and the host Blue Devils opened their season with a shutout in nonconference action.

Skylar Reilly had the shutout in goal for Warren.

Prairie Ridge 5, Antioch 0: Makena Silber scored 3 goals for the Wolves, who led 2-0 at halftime of the nonconference match.

Monica Wilhelm made 12 saves in goal for the Sequoits (1-1).

"Prairie Ridge was a fast, athletic, and physical team that put us under constant pressure," Sequoits assistant coach Matt Bohmann said. "Giving up a goal early set us back, but we battled and it was only 2-0 at the break. We continued to struggle to win 50-50 balls and within a short time it was 5-0. We didn't give up and played hard for the final 23 minutes."

Stevenson 1, Glenbrook North 1: Brianna VanZanten scored off a through ball from Hannah Lapeire for Stevenson's lone goal in its season opener.

Hannah Petrich made 8 saves in goal for the Patriots.

Grayslake North 2, Deerfield 2: Maddie Wilkinson and Sydney Paez scored for the Knights in the nonconference match.

Lauren Davis and freshman Emma Hochstein had assists.

Wilkinson scored just four minutes into the match.

"I am proud of the effort we saw from our girls this evening, particularly in the first half," said coach Adam DeCaluwe, whose Knights are 1-0-1. "Throughout the first half, against a quality Deerfield side that has experience and talent all over their lineup, we managed to put them under some good pressure early, while limiting their looks at goal in our defensive third."

Deerfield was up 2-0 when Paez netted the equalizer with less than eight minutes to play in regulation.
