Softball: Gaylord, Sequoits power past Johnsburg in opener
Carlie Gaylord homered twice, Megan Lawrence also went deep, and Antioch's softball team opened its season by beating host Johnsburg 16-2 in five innings Tuesday.
Jill Foote was 3-for-3 with a double, triple, stolen base and an RBI for the Sequoits. Gaylord (2-for-3) hit a 3-run blast and a solo shot. Antioch's other offensive contributors included Stephanie Bonaguidi (double), Avery Malicki (2-for-2, RBI), Annie Wagner (2-for-2), Ashley Stephens (2-for-4, 2 doubles, 3 RBI), Katie Sorenson (double, RBI) and Jackalyn Geraty (3-for-4, RBI).
Bonaguidi pitched 3 innings for the win, allowing 1 earned run. Hannah Cook finished up with 2 scoreless frames.
Warren 16, Deerfield 4: At Barrington's Fields of Dreams. Caitlyn Britton homered twice, doubled and knocked in 3 runs, as the Blue Devils won for the second day in a row in the Spring Fling.
Britton - who has started the season 5-for-9 with 3 doubles, 2 homers and 7 RBI - was 3-for-4, as were Emma Gratz and Ashlyn Kitter. Warren (2-0) got 2 hits apiece from Emily Hudgins and Sarah Finkel (4 RBI).
Barrington 13, Lake Zurich 0: At Barrington's Fields of Dreams, the Bears fell to 1-1 in the annual Spring Fling.
Lake Zurich got 1-for-2 efforts from Amanda Guercio, Sarah Schnecker and freshman Elizabeth Chialdikas.
Fremd 10, Vernon Hills 9: Becca Uhrich hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh for the Vikings in the nonconference game.
