Baseball: Kmets connect again as Viator tops Elk Grove

St. Viator's baseball team improved to 2-0, and for the second straight day the brothers Kmet had a lot to do with the outcome.

Casey Kmet, hitting in the No. 3 spot, finished 2-for-4 with 2 runs scored and Cole Kmet, batting cleanup, went 3-for-3 with a homer and a double and drove in 3 runs as the Lions topped host Elk Grove 6-1 on Tuesday in a nonconference matchup.

Jake Sinnema also had 3 hits for St. Viator, including a double, and Casey Pulikowski contributed a double in the Lions' 9-hit effort.

St. Viator did most of its damage with a 5-run rally in the fifth inning. That made a winner of Jack Mahoney, who tossed 2 innings of 1-hit, scoreless relief. Lions starter Brett DeSelm pitched 3 innings and allowed 1 earned run.

Austin Brown had 2 of the 5 hits for Elk Grove (1-1), which committed 6 errors.

Cole Kmet homered for the second straight day for St. Viator.

Niles West 10, Wheeling 0 (5 inn.): Jack Splett had Wheeling's only hit as the Wildcats allowed 9 runs in the third inning of a nonconference loss.

Hinsdale Central 11, Conant 2: Red Devils starter Andrew Zapka allowed a pair of hits over 4 innings and a pair of Hinsdale Central relievers combined for three scoreless innings as the visiting Cougars dropped a nonconference game.

Tim Fauth doubled and drove in 1 of the runs for Conant (0-2).

Bartlett 16, Rolling Meadows 1 (5 inn.): Three Mustangs pitchers combined to allow 12 walks in a nonconference loss to the visiting Hawks.

Dundee-Crown 5, Schaumburg 3: The visiting Saxons matched the Chargers with 6 hits, but 4 Schaumburg errors played a part in Dundee-Crown scoring 3 unearned runs in nonconference play. Jack Lancaster and Jakob Kolodziej had 2 hits apiece for the Saxons.
