Campton Hills hopefuls tout strengths

Candidates for three 4-year seats on the Campton Hills Village Board in the April 4 election have outlined why they are running for trustee and the strengths and qualities they would bring to the post.

Incumbents Mike Millett and Mike Tyrrell are seeking another term on the board, while challengers Joe Carpenter, Nick Girka, Robert Santoro and Wendy White-Eagle also are on the ballot.

At least one new person will be elected as Jim McKelvie, who was appointed to fill a vacancy, isn't running for a full term.

Millett is one of the original members of the board dating back to when the village was incorporated a decade ago. Millett, a civil engineer, wants to continue his service on the board and be a good steward of the environment.

"I'd like to give it another four years to finish our zoning ordinance, revise our comprehensive plan," he said.

Tyrrell, who was appointed to fill a vacancy, noted his history of involvement dating to 1992 when he was on an advisory board for a state representative and his support of open space initiatives in 2000.

"I don't look at being on the village board as a membership," Tyrrell said. "I like to think of it as being a public servant and a representative."

Carpenter has served 1½ years on the village's plan commission, which reviews development proposals and makes recommendations to the village board. He also has served as chairman of the village's zoning board of appeals for the past six months and wants to give back and promote controlled, responsible growth if elected.

"I find myself very privileged to be part of Campton Hills," Carpenter said. "I'm just really excited about everything going on."

Girka, who has served as village clerk since spring 2015, said he has two young children and will be a Campton Hills resident for the long haul. He pledged to work toward what is in the best interests of the village as a whole.

"I'm there on behalf of the largest number of residents in the village," Girka said. "We're not always going to make everyone happy."

White-Eagle, who serves on the village's plan commission, noted her background in investing and organizational development. If elected, she wants to host community forums every six weeks to get more resident input in village government. White-Eagle said she will bring change to the board.

"The village has been around for 10 years. The water line continues to go up, we're at another stage in the evolution of the village and it would be great to get some new ideas on the board," she said.

Efforts to reach Santoro were unsuccessful.
