Elk Grove's police K-9 is getting a bulletproof vest

Mack, a member of the Elk Grove Village Police Department's K-9 unit, is getting a bulletproof vest.

The 2-year-old Belgian Malinois will get the extra layer of protection thanks to a donation from Vested Interest, a Massachusetts-based nonprofit, and the Elk Grove Village VFW Post 9284.

There's an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s in the country, and Vested Interest works to outfit them with bullet- and stab-protective vests.

Mack, who's partner is veteran police Officer Richard Meyers, is known for tracking down a prisoner in a densely wooded area after the escapee fled a hospital.
