Woman hospitalized after car crashes into Batavia bank

One person was taken to the hospital in serious condition after a car crashed into a column outside a Batavia bank Thursday evening, fire officials said.

Emergency responders were called about 5:30 p.m. to PNC Bank, 825 N. Randall Road, and arrived to find a vehicle that had struck a column outside the bank, Batavia Battalion Chief John Lucas said.

Firefighters helped free the 71-year-old driver from her vehicle, which had sustained heavy damage to its front end, and took her for treatment at Delnor Hospital.

Damage to the building is believed to be cosmetic, Lucas said.

"We called the building department out to verify that there was no structural damage. I think it was just cosmetic," he said. "The column (supported a roof) but it's not part of the wall system."

Batavia police continue to investigate the cause of the crash.
