Fremont 2nd Graders learn with hands on Fire Safety

Countryside Fire District has been instrumental in providing fire safety education to the five school districts that are within their borders for over the past 25 years. Countryside Fire utilizes the National Fire Protection Association education programs to help meet school objectives. The grade students have been provided the "Where There's Smoke, There's Science" lesson about the Fire Triangle.

Tony Rodkey, Public Education Coordinator tells the students, "It is very scientific", and they learn how fire needs heat, fuel and oxygen to grow. After learning some integrated hands on strategies from Mrs. Nicole Lukemeyer of the Fremont Elementary School, Rodkey tailored this new activity for the 2nd grade classes as a pilot program reaching about 275 students this week.

"The hands on activity allows the 2nd grade students to work in groups of 3 to 4, cut out heat, fuel and oxygen pictures provided, sort out for correct placement and glue onto the fire triangle poster provided to enhance the previous lesson in fall," Rodkey stated.

Additionally, the students learn from each other, learn to work in teams and develop the ability to identify how fire is used daily, such as cooking food or heating our homes.

Rodkey explains to students that when we are not careful fire can become out of control and the importance of smoke alarms in the home and how to get outside.

March 12 was Daylight Savings, remember when you change your clocks, change the batteries in your smoke alarms.
