Round Lake Beach man charged after hostage situation

A Round Lake Beach man has been charged after a case of domestic battery turned into a hostage and barricade situation that started Sunday night and stretched into early Monday, police said.

Round Lake Beach police responded just before 10 p.m. to a home on the 1500 block of East End Avenue after someone who had been punched in the head several times was able to flee, authorities said in a news release.

Officer learned four additional people were barricaded in a bedroom while a man, identified as Rodrigo Acosta-Cabellero, 25, armed himself with a machete, police said. The four people later escaped through a window.

Acosta-Cabellero eventually came outside and toward officers with the machete, yelling for officers to shoot him, police said. Officers fired bean bag rounds at him, and he retreated into the home.

Acosta-Cabellero refused to communicate with officers and negotiators, authorities said, and police fired tear gas into the home in an unsuccessful attempt to drive him out. Officers eventually entered the home, immobilized Acosta-Cabellero and took him into custody just after 4 a.m., police said.

He was charged with aggravated unlawful restraint, aggravated domestic battery, battery, and resisting a peace officer.
