Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what is it?I am running for office because I will have three children attending MHS and want to be sure they are getting the best education possible. I feel it is critical to be informed on what is going in education and it is essential to prepare our children for the future. MHS has a new addition that has given us the chance to provide our students with many opportunities to learn the technical skills that are needed for the workforce as it continues to becoming more technically challenging. What do you think about the process for measuring student success in your district? Is it adequate? What changes, if any, do you propose?I believe we need to think strategically and set clear expectations for the skill sets our incoming students need to have mastered. MHS currently uses the Star exam to evaluate current and incoming students and I would like to make sure all of our feeder districts are aware of this and are in alignment with these expectations. It is important that we work together to determine the best way to assess our students so that they can succeed. How big a role do you think the board of education should play in setting the curriculum for students and what ideas do you have for changes to the current curriculum?Standards for our students are set by the state so that our children have the opportunity to attend the college of their choice. It is the job of the board of education to guide the administration and help them provide the best opportunities for our students to achieve their goals. It is essential that our administration is continuously trying to improve the curriculum so that all students are engaged and challenged to reach their full potential. What budget issues will your district have to confront and what measures do you support to address them? If you believe cuts are necessary, what programs and expenses should be reduced or eliminated? On the income side, do you support any tax or fee increases?I currently serve as Vice President on the District 76 Scool Board which was just recognized for it exemplary financial record. It is important to know what challenges the district is facing and how to use our money to best serve the needs of all of our students. MHS has built the addition to enhance the educational experience and continues to improve our facilities for our students. I will support all measures to support our students, to ensure our students safety and maintain our facilities while being fiscally responsible to our taxpayers. What role can and should school choice play in your district? If Congress or the state approves a voucher system or other means giving students broader choices among public and private schools, how will that affect your district? What is the appropriate response for the board of education of a public school system?I believe in the public school system. We have an extremely important responsibility, preparing the next generation to be productive citizens. If vouchers were approved, it would be essential that every school provide accountability that they are meeting the needs of all students. Education has always been the key to success and we must ensure that all children are given a fair chance. Our society succeeds when we all succeed. What other issues, if any, are important to you as a candidate for this office? It is my goal to see MHS as an educational leader that provides ALL students an opportunity to succeed by providing a world class education. Our future depends on it!Please name one current leader who most inspires you.Michelle Obama is inspirational because she came from a family who valued hard work, education, and used her position to help children. What is the biggest lesson you learned at home growing up?I learned that you are only entitled to what you work for and being kind to others makes the world a better place. If life gave you one do-over, what would you spend it on?I would have learned a second language. What was your favorite subject in school and how did it help you in later life?I loved English and reading gave me an appreciation for history as well as other cultures. If you could give your children only one piece of advice, what would it be?Education is invaluable! Find a problem in the world you would like to fix and solve it! Be kind to others!
