Author to visit ECC for Writers Center Reading Series event April 27

Elgin Community College will welcome Mai Der Vang to the Writers Center Reading Series on Thursday, April 27. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Building H Arts Center, Room H142, 1700 Spartan Drive in Elgin.

Mai Der Vang received the 2016 Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets and her first book, "Afterland," will be published by Graywolf Press in 2017.

Vang's poetry has appeared or is forthcoming in Poetry, Virginia Quarterly Review, New Republic, American Poets and The Cincinnati Review. Her essays have been published in the New York Times, Washington Post and the San Francisco Chronicle. Vang's work has also been anthologized in "Troubling Borders: An Anthology of Art and Literature" by Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora.

Vang earned her bachelor of arts in English from the University of California, Berkeley, along with a master of fine arts in creative writing/poetry from Columbia University. She lives in Fresno, Calif.

All Writers Center readings are free and open to the public.

A pre-reading dinner with Vang will be held at 5:30 p.m.

Books will be available for sale and signing.
