Nevins, Petro, Dellorto earn MSL swimming honor

The Mid-Suburban League's boys swimmer/diver of the year awards, as determined by the votes of the coaches, have been announced by the conference.

Senior Nick Nevins of Fremd is the West Division's winner, and in the East Division, juniors Michael Petro of Hersey and Josh Dellorto of Rolling Meadows share the honor.

Nevins' sprint freestyle excellence helped Fremd repeat as conference champs this year.

He won the 50-yard freestyle at both the conference and sectional meets, and also took legs on all three of Fremd's state-qualifying relays. Two of them - the 200 medley and 400 free - scored points in the state meet.

Nevin's best-ever 50 freestyle time - 21.14 - came in his last opportunity, in the consolation finals of the event at the state meet. He placed ninth in that race.

Petro produced a stellar season.

A conference champ for Hersey in both his individual races at the conference meet, he finished with a terrific state championship meet, qualifying to the final heat of both the 200 IM and 100 fly.

He improved his position there on Saturday with a lifetime best of 48.94 in the fly, which better the automatic All-American standard, and with a 1:50.12 in the 200 IM. In both events, Petro finished as state runner-up to a senior competitor.

Dellorto earned a third straight participation in the state meet by qualifying individually in the 100 free and by providing key legs on Rolling Meadows' freestyle relays, both of which established team records.

At the state meet, Dellorto came up with a lifetime best of 47.28 in the prelim session, which qualified him for his first point-scoring opportunity and a 12th-place finish.
