Lake Zurich grad Brown a hardcourt success at Calvin College
Calvin College tennis player David Brown was named Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association player of the week for matches through Feb. 12. This was the first time in his career that Brown has claimed the honor.
"I am very happy for David," Calvin coach John Ross said. "He is very deserving of this honor. ... He has worked really hard and it is nice to his hard work get rewarded."
Brown, a junior and Lake Zurich graduate, posted a perfect 2-0 record in singles play and in doubles play on Feb. 11. At No. 4 singles, he defeated Scott Daluga of Augustana, 6-1, 6-0. He then topped Alex Koziel of Concordia at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Brown and Rodrigo Castellanos Vaca Guzmán won at No. 2 doubles against Augustana, 8-0. Brown tallied another victory at No. 1 doubles with Taylor Asfour against Concordia, 8-0.
Softball
Wauconda graduate Kayla Wedl is off to a terrific start for the University of Illinois-Chicago softball team.
The freshman infielder was named Horizon League player of the week for the period of Feb. 6-12 after helping the Flames go 5-0 in the Total Control Sports Invitational (Feb. 10-12) at The Dome in Rosemont. The 5-0 start was UIC's first since 1996.
Wedl batted .538 in the tournament, going 7-for-13 with 3 doubles and 3 triples for a 1.231 slugging percentage. She also scored 7 runs and posted a Horizon League-best 6 RBI, including a pair of sacrifice flies.
In 18 games, Wedl is batting .308 (16-for-52) with 8 RBI.
• Warren graduate Hannah Nommensen has a 3-0 record and 3.23 ERA in 21⅔ innings pitched for the University of North Carolina. She has appeared in 8 games, including 2 starts. The Tar Heels were 16-5 through Wednesday.
Nommensen graduated early from Warren, choosing to skip her senior season this spring in order to pitch for UNC.
Volleyball
Grant senior Ashley Freund has signed with Carthage College in Kenosha to play volleyball in the fall for the Lady Reds under Coach LeAnn Ulmer.
While playing for Grant last season, the middle hitter earned all-conference honors. She plays club volleyball for Stateline.
"Ashley's dedication to the sport of volleyball and her studies made her the perfect candidate to be signed for this college scholarship," Stateline coach Dan Noonan said. "Her leadership on the court is inspiring."
