'Learn from the Experts' program to focus on the life of sandhill cranes

One hundred years ago, sandhill cranes were a rare sight in Kane County, but, thanks to improvements in conservation laws and habitat restoration, their populations have rebounded.

The next "Learn from the Experts" nature program on Thursday, March 16, will examine the life of sandhill cranes.

Today, sandhill cranes not only stop here during migration, but increasingly are nesting here.

Learn what makes these regal birds tick, bugle and dance, as you explore their life history and behaviors via photos and video.

This program is from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at Hickory Knolls Discovery Center, 3795 Campton Hills Drive, St. Charles.

Registration fee is $10 per person and advance registration is required. To register, call (630) 444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com.

"Learn from the Experts" programs are for ages 18 and older. They are taught by experts in the field and offer in-depth information and learning opportunities about our local ecology.

This program series is co-sponsored by the Forest Preserve District of Kane County, the St. Charles Park District and the Geneva Park District.

In April, the "Learn from the Expert" program will explore "Horses in Ecology and Culture" with naturalist and equestrian Lisa O'Brien.

She will share her passion for both nature and horses in this two-part series. You may take each class independently, or you may sign up for both. Cost is $10 per program. Frontenac Farms is owned and operated by Kane County Certified Naturalist Cindi Martinovec. Advance registration is required. Call 630-444-3190 or email programs@kaneforest.com to register.

Part 1 will be 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, at Frontenac Farms, 35W199 Boncosky Road in Sleepy Hollow

Part 2 will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, at Frontenac Farms. Horses share a common, wild ancestor, but thousands of years of domestication have led to many "horses of a different color." Look at this magnificent species in its modern forms. You'll learn about the conformation, or the form and function, of breeds. You'll get to see some breeds on the farm and learn how to differentiate between them. This class will be outside in an unheated barn. Dress for the weather and wear boots.
